FRISCO, TX (1080 KRLD) - Thieves that target women of Indian descent have returned to Frisco.

Police say the man and woman team are after manga sutras, an expensive Hindu necklaces that married Indian women typically wear.  The thieves look for women of Indian descent who are walking and strike up a conversation, often asking for directions to a hospital. Then, the thieves try to get physically close by hugging the victim and sometimes give the victim a cheap necklace as a token of appreciation.

That is a large part of the scam.  The thief will put the necklace on the victim.  When the victim refuses to accept the gift, the thief takes both the prop and the real one.

“The (shtick) is very similar in terms of gaining someone’s trust.  Getting close to them to be able to remove jewelry whatever type of jewelry that might be,” said Officer Grant Cottingham of Frisco Police.

Thieves, possibly the same two, operated in Frisco last fall.  They were never caught.

So far nine cases have been reported since the beginning of last month.
