The Fort Worth Water Department is warning you of imposters with illicit intentions.
On Wednesday, two men went to an elderly woman's East Fort Worth home claiming to be contractors with the water department.
"They went to the customer and they told the customer that they needed access to her house, because they hit her water main line, and her water was contaminated and they needed to test it," says Mary Gugliuzza, water department spokeswoman.
The woman's daughter was home at the time.
"One of them went around to the back of the house and another one went ahead and came in, though she (the daughter) did not want to give them entry," says Gugliuzza, "and they apparently they stole some jewelry and money from her."
Gugliuzza says employees and contractors will almost never need to enter a customer's home.
"If we do any water quality testing, be it on our own initiation or at a customer's request, we always take those samples from an outside faucet and do not need to enter the home to do the sample," says Gugliuzza.
Furthermore, employees will drive marked vehicles, wear uniforms bearing the city's logo and carry city-issued photo IDs.
Anyone who gets a visit from someone impersonating a water department employee should call the Fort Worth Police Department at 817-392-4222 and call the water department at 817-392-4477 to make it aware of the incident.
