When officers tried to stop the car, they say the driver sped off and into a neighborhood. When he stopped in the 900 block of Alamo, police say he got out of the car and started shooting at officers.

"It's very frightening," says Lt. Pedro Barineau. "Our officers are trying to pursue this person based on what happened. He gets out of the car and starts shooting at officers."

Barineau says officers took cover and could not return fire. The gunman ran into the neighborhood.

"There's nothing routine about police work," Barineau says. "You never know who you're dealing with, especially in a simple property crime such as a stolen vehicle."

They identified a suspect, Aaron Quiroz Jr., 22. He was found several miles away in Richardson. Quiroz has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant, and one count each of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Barineau says K9 units and Dallas Police Air 1 responded, but the gunman escaped. No officers were hurt.

He was in the Garland City Jail Wednesday afternoon. Bond had not been set.
