General Motors is shifting Cadillac Escalade production from its longstanding Arlington Assembly plant to Orion Assembly in Michigan in early 2027, as part of a nationwide $4 billion surge in traditional gas-vehicle manufacturing.
However, GM assures residents that the plant’s roughly 5,200 local employees will stay fully employed building other full-size SUVs like the Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon - and even pick up extra volume - thanks to prior investments topping $500 million and a statewide GM workforce surpassing 8,300.
That matters in Arlington’s economy: the 70-year-old facility churns out more than 1,300 vehicles a day, generating over $523 million in annual local wages and supplying roughly $412 million in state taxable income.
City leaders echoed steady reassurance, saying neither headcount nor shift schedules will be impacted, with Mayor Jim Ross noting that GM has built “13 million cars and employed tens of thousands” here since 1954 - and isn’t going anywhere.
