SAN ANTONIO — Republican Texas House nominee Jorge Borrego is apologizing after years-old social media posts resurfaced, including slurs and references to illegal drugs.

The Tribune said it later reviewed additional tweets that used slurs for gay people, a racial slur, an Asian stereotype, language about cocaine and meth, a fake Hitler quote and crude sexual comments. The newspaper said many of the posts were still visible on X at the time of publication.
Borrego, 30, is the GOP nominee in House District 118, a majority-Hispanic swing seat on San Antonio’s south side. Republicans held the district by about 3.5 percentage points in 2024. State Rep. John Lujan is running for Congress instead. Democrat Kristian Carranza, who nearly flipped the seat last cycle, is the November opponent.

Borrego’s first public reply on X was brief: “I was 16 lol.” He said one target of an old post was his cousin.
After the Tribune showed him more tweets, he issued a statement calling the posts “crude and immature jokes I made when I was a kid.” He said they were not admissions of actions he had taken, apologized to anyone hurt and said they do not represent “my current sentiments.”
In the same statement, Borrego said he grew up around drug and alcohol abuse, was raised by a teenage mother while his father was incarcerated, and used “dark humor to cope with trauma.” He said that context “does not excuse” the posts.
Borrego is a realtor and former education policy staffer at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. He won a three-way GOP primary in March with 53% of the vote. Gov. Greg Abbott and Texans for Lawsuit Reform PAC backed him. The Tribune said those groups did not comment on the posts.
Carranza told the Tribune she was disgusted by the language and by the “lol” response, and said Borrego “should be in rehab, not public office.”
House Speaker Dustin Burrows is scheduled to hold a San Antonio fundraiser Thursday for Borrego and two other local Republicans.
