As Texans prepare to head to the polls this weekend for municipal elections, there is a growing call to move the spring election to the fall to help increase voter turnout.
Dallas County Judge Clay Lewis Jenkins says he is not sure how soon that could become reality but he believes it would likely boost the number of people voting.
"If we could move the local elections to the November ballot, where most people are used to voting and more people vote, that could see a larger turnout in those races," Lewis Jenkins said.
The City of Dallas already made it possible by approving a proposition in a recent election.
Lawmakers in Austin would have to give their approval.
"For now, we are still in that low turnout May election so it's even more important that you vote now when your vote would carry more weight than it would in a November election," Lewis Jenkins said.
While it is believed, if it is approved by state lawmakers, that citywide elections would happen in odd-numbered years in November, it is the even-numbered years where voters decide on the president or governor.
