The Highland Park High School boys soccer team was forced to forfeit its UIL Class 5A state championship just hours after claiming the title, due to the use of an ineligible player.
The Scots defeated Liberty Hill 2-0 on Friday to win what appeared to be a state championship. But within six hours of the victory, Highland Park administrators discovered the eligibility issue and self-reported it to the University Interscholastic League.
After confirming the violation, the UIL ordered Highland Park to forfeit the match and awarded the state title to Liberty Hill.
“We would like to recognize the Highland Park boys soccer team for their hard work, dedication, and the way they represented our school throughout the season,” Highland Park ISD said in a statement.
The nature of the eligibility violation has not been publicly disclosed.
