The annual open enrollment season is here. It's time to look at your coverage and find the plan that works for you and your budget.

A recent survey found that more than one-in-three Americans spend less than an hour reviewing their health benefit options.

"Well, a lot can change in a year. You may be very happy with your current plan, and it very well may meet your needs, but you may have new plans available to you. Take that time to consider all of your options. You need more than an hour. I need more than an hour, and I've worked in this industry for quite some time," says Rhonda Randall, Chief Medical Officer at UnitedHealthcare employer and individual.

Randall has some tips to help us while we're making selections.

1. Take your time: Don't rush through the open enrollment process. With so many options available, it's important to dedicate more than just an hour to review your choices and consider new plans that may better suit your needs.

2. Learn the language: Health insurance terminology can be confusing. Brush up on the difference between terms like premium, deductible, co-pay, and coinsurance through the clear glossary available on the UnitedHealthcare website.

3. Check coverage details: Ensure that your plan covers all the necessary aspects, including mental health coverage, telebehavioral health options, and specialty benefits such as vision, dental, and hearing care.

4. Explore wellness programs: Take advantage of wellness programs that promote healthy living and prevent complications related to preventable diseases. These programs may include health surveys, smoking cessation support, weight loss programs, and more.

5. Budget considerations: Be mindful of your financial situation when selecting a plan. Look beyond just the premiums and consider deductibles and out-of-pocket costs as well. Don't forget to check if your personal doctor is within the plan's network and ensure coverage for prescription medications.
