Officials with Dallas County Health and Human Services are reporting the first West Nile Virus death in Dallas County for the 2023 season.
Health officials say the unidentified woman lived in Irving and was diagnosed with the more serious strain of the virus. There have been seven cases of West Nile in the county this year.
“It’s very sad to report the first West Nile Virus death this season,” said Dr. Philip Huang, Director of DCHHS. “This again reminds us how important it is to protect against mosquito bites that can carry multiple diseases like WNV. Mosquito activity remains high in Dallas County, and we recommend residents follow the Four Ds during this time of the year.”
Those are:
DEET: Whenever you’re outside, use insect repellents that contain DEET or other EPA-approved repellents and follow instructions.
DRESS: Wear long, loose, and light-colored clothing when outdoors.
DRAIN: Drain or treat all standing water in and around your home or workplace where mosquitoes could lay eggs.
DAWN to DUSK: Limit your time outdoors during these times when mosquitoes are most active.
This is the second person in Texas with the virus to pass away this year.
