Back-to-school items will be tax-free this weekend across Texas as parents take students shopping before the first day of class in many districts.
This marks the 25th year Texas has offered a no-tax weekend on what students need to buy to return to school, including notebooks, backpacks, scissors, legal pads, lunch boxes, and more. But Kevin Lyons with the Texas Comptroller's Office said if it is something considered "specialized," parents will have to pay tax.
"We've got football season coming up and you've got to get your kids cleats for football or track cleats. Those aren't tax-free because they're specialized," he said.
There's a full list on the comptroller's website. There's also a form to download in case a consumer is wrongly charged sales tax.
