PGA Tour Champions will come to Las Colinas Country Club in Irving later this month for the first ClubCorp Classic. ClubCorp Classic will pair golfers on the senior tour with celebrities.
The event will be the PGA's first in Las Colinas since the Byron Nelson Championship left in 2018. A total of 50 celebrities will be paired with 78 PGA Tour Champions. Among celebrities will be Tony Romo, Roger Clemens, and Hall of Fame Pitcher John Smoltz
"This is Tony Romo's backyard, almost," Smoltz said. "Of course, Derek Lowe won the tournament in January, so he's coming off a win. The thing about these tournaments is it's more of a shoot-out. Stroke play is not as important. You've got to make some birdies."
"Anytime you can compete with someone who's much better than you at something, for me, anyway, I love that," said Mark Mulder, a former pitcher with the Oakland A's and St. Louis Cardinals.
Corey Pavin, who has won 15 PGA tour events, will be among the professionals at the event. Pavin now lives in North Texas.
"Las Colinas Country Club is the place where I go to practice. There are a lot of great people out there; they're looking forward to the tournament," Pavin said.
PGA Tour Champions President Miller Brady says ClubCorp Classic will draw up to 15,000 visitors and have an economic impact of up to $15 million on the area.
Money raised at the event will go to three non-profits in North Texas.
Momentous Institute is an organization that "collaborates with children, families and communities to build and repair social emotional health through education, therapeutic services, research and training so all children can achieve their full potential."
Proceeds will also benefit First Tee Dallas and First Tee Fort Worth, youth development organizations that integrate "the game of golf with a life skills curriculum" to build "inner strength, self-confidence, and resilience that kids can carry to everything they do."
"I think there will be a lot of positive things from this week," Pavin said. "The charities that are going to benefit from this are fantastic for the area."
