A Denton charity is working to make sure everyone has a proper winter coat during this arctic blast.

First Refuge Ministries has set up what it calls the Giving Fence outside its headquarters in Denton.

It actually started in 2020 at the outset of the pandemic.

"We started seeing the big need for those who need things such as coats, hats, people who did not have residences, to make sure that they had the layers that was needed to kind of help sustain during these frigid temperatures and cold weather," said Izell Bennett, director of community relations at First Refuge Ministries.

People can take a coat, a hat, a scarf or a pair of gloves — no strings attached.

"We have so many families and individuals who drive by who say, Hey, can I get something? I don't have a hat. I don't have a glove. Are these things available for the public?' It is very receptive and to have an opportunity without any strings attached, without having to fill out any paperwork, to just come and get the things that you need, because everyone deserves access to goods," Bennett said.

People can also leave one of those items on the fence for someone else to take and use.

"Everything we have on the fence has been donated by someone from the community," Bennett said. "whether it's a federal organization that we'll partner with, whether it's a local ministry that supports the vision and mission of First Refuge, or even just individuals."

First Refuge Ministries is located at 1701 Broadway St., Denton.
