A McKinney man's murder trial will begin Tuesday in connection to the November 2021 shooting of his common-law wife.
Joel Torres, 22, called police to report the shooting of 21-year-old Shailene Velez. He reported he was clearing his gun when it accidentally fired a shot.
Velez was pronounced dead at the scene and police said there was evidence that led them to believe the shooting was not an accident.
If convicted, Torres could face life in prison.
