Arlington Police say officers shot and killed a man in a park Sunday night. They had been called to Kane Park on Cooper Street, south of I-20, about 10:30 p.m. for a call about a domestic disturbance.
When they arrived, police say officers saw a man shoot a woman. Arlington Police say three officers fired at the man, killing him.
"Officers began providing first aid to the man and woman until paramedics arrived on the scene," says Arlington Police Sergeant Alex Rosado.
Rosado says the man, Shannon Boyd, died at the hospital. The woman went to the hospital in critical condition.
No officers were hurt.
Rosado says the two appear to have previously been in a relationship. He says Arlington's homicide unit is leading the criminal investigation.
"Domestic violence calls are some of the most dangerous calls we respond to," Rosado says. "They can be very unpredictable."
Internal Affairs is leading the investigation of whether the officers followed procedures. The officers are now on leave.
"We train for this. We prepare for this, but we're still human beings, and it's a very alarming call to respond to," Rosado says. "It certainly does take a toll. We have peer support available for the officers and other first responders."
Rosado says the two are from Irving, and they are working with other agencies to learn whether the suspect and victim have had previous encounters with police.
"We do believe there is a history of domestic violence," he says. "We're still working with our partner agencies to figure out exactly what the scope is between the two."
