The Mansfield school committee will consider a proposal that encourages students to select their own books to read, and once selections are made they will be posted online for parents, or anyone, to review.

The district has banned or limited access to certain books dealing with sexuality and gender fluidity but school district leaders insist parents will have the final say.

Reports say parents, students at least 18-years-old or older, and anyone who lives in the school district can challenge the materials selected. All challenges will then be review by a committee and if the committee decides the challenged material can stay, no one can challenge it again for at least one year.

If the committee removes the challenged book, it will be unavailable for 5 years.

No final vote on the new guidelines is expected at the meeting. The Mansfield school board meets at 6 p.m. tonight.
