MESQUITE (1080 KRLD)- The City of Mesquite has approved new regulations on homes used as short-term rentals. The regulations are designed to prevent large, disruptive parties at homes rented through services like Airbnb or Vrbo.

"Residents want to be able to peacefully enjoy their homes," said Mesquite City Council Member Tandy Boroughs. "Occupants of short-term rentals should not be able to host parties with dozens of people and create noise and parking problems. Neighborhoods were not designed to handle this type of use."

Short-term rental properties will require an annual license and inspection from the city. There will also be occupancy limits designed to prevent large parties or gatherings. The use of a short-term rental for commercial events will also be prohibited.

"Over the past several years we've had several issues with short-term rentals being used for large gatherings. These parties often get out of hand and police are called," said Mesquite Mayor Daniel Alemán Jr. "These changes are intended to hold the property owner responsible for activities that occur on their property and protect neighbors who do not want to be disturbed by weekly parties and loud noise."

Property owners will also be required to post contact information on-site for an agent or property manager who can respond to any complaints within 45 minutes.
