Mesquite Independent School District says nearly 515 employees will be impacted by planned staff reductions as part of a roughly $24 million budget cut for the upcoming school year, district leaders announced this week in Mesquite.

The reductions are tied to declining student enrollment and rising operating costs, including transportation, utilities, and employee benefits. District officials say Texas’ school funding formula is based largely on attendance, and fewer students have led to a significant drop in revenue.

Superintendent Angel Rivera told the school board the reductions represent one of the most difficult decisions facing the district, but administrators say the cuts are necessary to stabilize finances and prevent deeper budget shortfalls. The affected positions include a mix of instructional and non-instructional roles across the district.

Mesquite ISD serves tens of thousands of students across Dallas County. District leaders say they will continue reviewing staffing levels and spending as enrollment trends and state funding pressures continue into the next school year.
