The Mesquite school district is seriously considering a proposal to move to a 4 day school week, and a decision could be coming soon.
Officials with the Mesquite ISD say the four-day school week would address an "extreme teacher shortage" across the country.
The proposal says by adding one hour to each of the four days it would allow the district to structure a schedule that gives staff more flexibility.
But parents worry about lack of discipline and learning. "It already seems to be an issue with a standard school day," said one parent. Another addressed her concerns, saying "I worry about the decline of academic performance in lower income schools, and because no other large district has done this, i don't want our kids to be guinea pigs."
But one teacher says this move makes sense, and allows her to do more. "I can now schedule a doctor appointment for those days and do not have to take off and run the risk of a colleague having to cover my class becuase there are not enough substitutes."
The Mesquite school board will decide on the proposal by March 6th, according to reports.
