Now that the new India variant of the coronavirus has been detected in North Texas, Stephen Love, President of the DFW Hospital Council, says people who are fully vaccinated do not have to worry but people who are not vaccinated are at risk for becoming infected with the more contagious variant.
Love says it's more important than ever for everyone who can, to get a vaccine. UT Southwestern researchers say two people in the Dallas area have become infected with the India variant and neither has a recent travel history.
Love says, "It is concerning that the India variant has shown up here."
Concerning vaccination incentives, Love says he's in favor of anything that encourages more people to take a shot. He says right now nearly 40 percent of all Texans are fully vaccinated and 50 percent have received at least one dose.
Love says those rates have to go up if the state wants to reach herd immunity. He recommends parents get kids 12 to 15 vaccinated as soon as possible and he believes vaccines will be available for younger kids sometime this summer.
