A North Texas man was found guilty and sentenced to 13 years in prison over a May 2019 high-speed crash that killed a 9-year-old girl and severely injured her mother.
The jury was out most of Friday morning before deciding 66-year old Ricky Jackson should spend 13-years in prison and pay a $5,000 fine.
In 2019, Jackson got into a high-speed race in his orange Dodge Challenger, reaching speeds of up to 107 mph, on Lake June Road. The speed limit on that roadway is 35 mph.
Police say Jackson was going so fast he slammed into a car that was making a turn, killing a 9-year-old girl and critically injuring several family members.
Over the course of the trial, the jury heard emotional testimony from the victim's mother. The penalty range prosecutors proposed was between 2 to 20 years in prison.
It's not clear whether victim impact statements will be today or later. It will be the chance for the family of 9-year old Olivia Mendez to address him in court.
Yesterday, the child's mother's emotional testimony caused Jackson to break down in tears.
