The Plano school district will hire an outsider to investigate a woman's charges that her 13-year-old son was bullied and assaulted and subjected to racist slurs by other boys in his school.

Yesterday, Plano ISD Superintendent Sara Bonser spoke alongside Plano Police Chief Ed Drain and Plano Mayor Harry LaRosiliere to respond to an incident that has drawn national attention.

The boy's mother claims her son was invited to a sleepover solely to be the object of abuse as a form of entertainment.

“Detectives were instructed to not only look at the events that happened on February 12, 13, 14 but also any other incidents,” said Plano Police Chief Ed Drain, referring to additional videos that have been posted by Smith on social media allegedly showing other attacks on her son.

The district promises to hire an outside firm to look into reports of a pattern of bullying even before the sleepover.

With the investigation ongoing, the family of the bullied child tells NBCDFW they have been threatened and driven from their home. The leader of the Plano Independent School District says they, too, have been threatened with harm as they investigate the high-profile case.
