UPDATE: The pilot, 87-year-old Elzie McDonald of Arizona, was killed in the plane crash. NTSB will continue to look into his background in the investigation.
A small plane crashed in West Plano in a shopping center near Park Boulevard and Midway Road Tuesday.
“Small engine aircraft crashed in the parking lot of the 6500 block of W Park,” said the Plano Police Department’s Public Information Unit in an email to KRLD 1080. “The aircraft did not land on or collide with anything. There was a fire that involved an unoccupied parked vehicle.”
“A single-engine Mooney M20 crashed north of Air Park-Dallas Airport in Texas, around 6 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Only the pilot was on board,” said the Federal Aviation Administration in a statement. “The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide any updates.”
The plane came down near the Mama's Daughters Cafe before bursting into flames.
The location is not far from the Air Park-Dallas Airport, but we don't know yet if that plane was flying in or out of that airport at the time of the crash. We’re waiting to get word from Plano police if anyone was hurt in the crash. The NTSB is headed to the scene.
“Our public safety teams are responding to an accident,” said the City of Plano in a response post on X. The city also said a media staging area was set up at 6509 W Park, Ste 445.
