The Plano City Council has adopted a one-year moratorium on any new short-term rental homes through companies like Airbnb or VRBO. The Council took that step after hearing from residents who complained that short-term rentals could attract large crowds and activity that was inappropriate for neighborhoods.
"We all know the severity of the STR situation that is growing by the day," said Plano resident Suzanne Pappas. "Every moment we hesitate is another opportunity for a pop-up brothel, a shooting through a three-year-old's playroom, another weekend of neighbors dreading what they might be dealing with - depending on who shows up to the STR that weekend."
Pappas was one of several residents who urged the Council to act during a combined meeting of the Plano City Council and the Plano Planning and Zoning Commission.
"We want our neighbors back...our neighborhoods back," said Bill Baker. "We want them to be what they were meant to be - just neighborhoods."
The interim ban on new short-term rentals will take effect May 15th in Plano and remain in place for one year. Council Members will use that time to work on a permanent ordinance setting out regulations for the industry. Some Council Members said they need to see what action, if any, the Texas Legislature takes on state-wide regulations during the current session.
The City of Plano has set up a website to get residents' opinions on short-term rentals, They can fill out a survey and get information on a task force at www.PlanoSTR.com.
