The Plano school district is announcing new ethnic studies classes for high school seniors just weeks after a disturbing racial hazing incident that was allegedly aimed at a middle school student.
Although trustees apparently approved the idea in November, the district announced yesterday that high school seniors would have the option of taking classes on Mexican-American and African-American culture and history.
But critics feel the district is avoiding the main issues.
The incident in the home of a Haggard Middle School boy has put the Plano district in the national hot seat.
The attorney for the victim's family says they received a letter from the district saying "allegations of bullying and cyber-bullying were sustained" by the investigation. But any discipline taken against the other boys won't be released because the district considers it a privacy issue.
