North Texans are already on the ground in Florida and more are on their way. The American Red Crosses' Brian Murnahan said 25 Texans in total are already helping with relief efforts after Hurricane Idalia ripped through the big bend portion of Florida, parts of Georgia and Coastal Carolina.
It's not just volunteers heading to help those impacted, Murnahan said they've already sent supplies as well.
"We literally have thousands of comfort kits, thousands of cleanup kits, thousands of rakes and shovels and tarps," said Murnahan. "We've already sent several... a dozen or more rigs from this warehouse out to Florida."
Murnahan explained that Red Cross is the first line of response following first responders. He said they work with other organizations like the Texas Baptist Men and insurance companies to help get people impacted to a positive place following the disaster.
"They're going out there and they're checking out to seeing what homes are destroyed, what homes are damaged, they're setting up shelters, they're providing food, they're providing comfort, they're providing clothes, they're providing financial assistance," said Murnahan. "They're really just trying to make sure that the people out there know that there is someone who cares and that they actually have someone to lean on."
More than 400 Red Cross volunteers from all over the country are already in North Florida but Murnahan said this number will grow as volunteers continue to come from all across the country.
If you're wonder how you can help Murnahan said they actually need more volunteers right here in North Texas.
"We need volunteers here to respond to house fires, to take care of our men and women in the armed forces make those connections those folks need," said Murnahan.
He said whether you're a mental health professional or someone who can drive a forklift they can probably find a need for you no matter your skill set.
