Reunion Tower is planning its fifth annual fireworks show for New Year's Eve. Organizers say the show will include more than 5,400 "pyrotechnic special effects" and 259 LED lights.
The show will start at 11:59 p.m.
This year, the show will benefit Children's Health through the Reunion Tower NYE Foundation. Donations can be made here.
"We've tried to put some elements into the show about what everyone has been through this year," says Reunion Tower President Dusti Groskreutz. "The outstanding healthcare heroes have exemplified Dallas' can-do spirit during this difficult year. Everybody has gone above and beyond, but we're super excited to be honoring Children's Health this year."
Groskreutz says the show will include red and blue fireworks as tributes to first responders and healthcare workers. She says the show will also honor delivery drivers, utility workers and other essential workers.
People cannot gather in person outside Reunion Tower to watch the show this year. Police will close streets and parking lots nearby.
Reunion Tower is urging people to watch the show on television, the tower's Facebook page here, or Reunion Tower's YouTube channel here.
Groskreutz is urging people to watch the show online, saying this year's show was developed with a soundtrack.
"One of the songs, we're honoring not only the health care heroes, but everyone who has had to keep going on throughout this year," she says. "We're also looking toward the music that's rising up and looking back at the past. But then we'll finish up with a celebration and reclaim some joy for the new year, looking forward to 2021."
"Every year has had a special soundtrack," says Matt Peterson, creative director at Melrose Pyrotechnics. "There's a song for everybody in the soundtrack. For some, it might be more emotional. Some will be festive and kind of a dance feel. We also have a piece called 'Heroes,' and we're paying special tribute to all those front line workers."
Peterson says white, blue, red and amber lights will move around the tower and the fireworks will match that.
"The visuals coming from the tower, not only from the fireworks but also the lights around the sphere, they'll be new for this year," he says. "It's pretty cool, really. We hope people are going to create a memory and reflect on the year they've had and cherish and look forward to the new year. We'll see the good that, hopefully, lies ahead."
The soundtrack can also be heard on our sister station, 100.3 Jack FM, and the show will air on NBC 5.
