Sansom Park police are mourning the loss of Lieutenant Dan, the department's first ever drug dog.

The 11-year-old black lab died from cancer this week -- just days after sniffing out $10,000 worth of drugs in three cars, leading to three arrests.

Before coming to Sansom Park, Lieutenant Dan worked drug details for two other law enforcement agencies including the Hood County Sheriff's Office which used social media to express their own sadness at their old friend's passing.

Lieutenant Dan's Sansom Park partner, officer Nathan Hagin, says his friend collapsed at his feet and died just days after they got the cancer diagnosis.

Hagin says he even tried CPR but there was nothing he could do.
