IRVING — Scouting America - the organization formerly known as Boy Scouts of America - says it is “surprised and disappointed” following reports that Pete Hegseth is pushing to sever long-standing ties between the U.S. military and the scouting group.

According to recent reporting based on a draft memo reviewed by NPR, Hegseth proposes ending Pentagon support for guiding resources to the scouting organization’s events - including the National Jamboree - and barring Scout troops from meeting on military installations.

Founded in 1910 and headquartered in Irving, Scouting America changed its name from Boy Scouts in early 2025. The organization has worked with the military for more than a century, with support ranging from logistical help at jamborees to allowing Scouts access to military bases and family-friendly programs for service members’ children.

In response to the proposal, Scouting America’s CEO emphasized the group’s long history of working with “every U.S. presidential administration -Democratic and Republican” and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to instilling values of integrity, service, and community in youth.

As of now, the memo has not been formally submitted to Congress and the Pentagon has declined to confirm its authenticity, calling it a “leaked document” that may reflect pre-decisional ideas under review.

Scouting America officials say they are working to understand the potential impact on their programs - and that, regardless of outcome, they are committed to continuing service to families across the country, including those with military ties.
