Members of the Transport Workers Union Local 556 voted to support the strike authorization by a wide margin.

This is the first time that has happened in the union's history but it does not mean a strike is imminent.

The leadership of the flight attendants union says pay that sets a new industry standard is a necessity - but they also want to be valued just as highly as other employees at the company.

Airline workers are regulated by the Railway Labor Act. It requires a 30-day cooling-off period and federal regulators would also have to release the union from mediation.

Union representatives say they want appropriate compensation for ground time and scheduling for on-call rotations as part of any new contract.
