The battle over controversial books continues, with the Texas Education Agency now recommending new library policies.
The TEA is recommending that school districts post a list of library books currently on their shelves online so that parents know what their kids have access to.
This comes as Governor Abbott and other state lawmakers call into question the content of books allowed in school libraries, going so far as to call certain content "pornographic".
Meanwhile, the Texas Library Association is actively fighting the act of banning books. TLA Executive Director Shirley Robinson says parents shouldn't have any say over what goes into school libraries.
"They have the right to choose what their children read, they don't have the right to choose what other children read and the decisions that other parents are going to make for their children." Robinson says. "Banning books is a really dangerous practice. It calls into question the processes and the professionalism of librarians and educators who work very hard to curate content that is appropriate for all audiences."
The TEA is recommending that districts review its new Library Materials Policy, but it’s not mandatory.
