Classmates of a student who was shot and killed in Fort Worth are setting up a scholarship in his name.

Wes Smith was a junior at TCU when he was killed in a random shooting in the city's West 7th District earlier this month.

In his memory, there's a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for a scholarship fund.

The campaign organized by fellow TCU junior and friend Landon Bonadiman had an original goal of $10,000.

In less than four days, it has more than doubled that amount.

Bonadiman says the money will be split two ways.

"Half of it is going to Wes' fraternity; he was a Kappa Sigma here at TCU. They are starting a scholarship fund through their fraternity in his name," says Bonadiman. "That's going to be awarded to a young man every year, who exemplifies high character and lives out in their daily life what Wes stood for and what he was about.

"The other half will be given to TCU directly through an endowed fund that they have started to create a Wes Smith Memorial Scholarship at the university," Bonadiman continued. "We're really excited to donate as of right now $10,000 to both causes and hopefully much more."

Bonadiman says it's his way of keeping Smith's legacy alive.

"This is a lot bigger than myself," says Bonadiman. "This is about starting a fund that's going to make a big impact on our campus."
