A new survey says most Texans are ready to legalize marijuana, and not just for medical purposes.

Some Texas cities have already voted to decriminalize marijuana and UNT political science professor Dr. Kimi King says medicinal use is an option for some.

"For some it's a health related issue and cannabis oil is being used to treat them" said King. "You can get a prescription."

But a new survey by the University of Houston shows that most Texans want more than what is authorized under the state's Compassionate Use Program for medical CBD and low-THC cannabis that is only available for specific medical conditions and qualifying patients. It found that 82% of Texans want to expand the state's medical marijuana program.

At least 81% of those surveyed want to decriminalize small amounts of pot. And 67% want to legalize recreational use for adults over the age of 21 - similar to the state's alcohol consumption laws.

King says the process of legalizing marijuana is different in every state, but it usually starts with decriminalization, then progresses to legalizing medicinal use, and then to recreational use by adults.
