Shih Hsin University President Chen Ching-ho is taking a two-month unpaid leave after sparking widespread backlash over remarks he made during a graduation ceremony last month in Taipei, Taiwan.

Chen delivered the comments at the university’s commencement on May 30, telling master’s and doctoral graduates that if they fail to manage their time, emotions, or health in the workforce, they should “quickly end themselves” because “this world no longer needs your existence.” The remarks, widely interpreted as encouraging suicide, drew immediate criticism online and from the public.

On June 5, Chen issued a public apology on social media, acknowledging that his words were poorly expressed due to a tight schedule and that he had not been sufficiently careful. He clarified that his intent was to encourage graduates to build strong life and workplace skills, but he took full responsibility for the inappropriate phrasing. Effective June 8, he requested and received approval for the unpaid leave to reflect on the incident.

The university also issued a separate statement apologizing for the disruption caused to students, alumni, faculty, and the broader community. Vice President Lin Heng-chih will serve as acting president during Chen’s absence.

The controversy has highlighted ongoing discussions in Taiwan about mental health awareness, workplace pressures on young professionals, and the responsibilities of public figures in educational leadership roles. No injuries or other incidents were reported in connection with the speech.
