Testimony will finally begin today in a lawsuit over a fatal crane collapse in Dallas that happened nearly four years ago.

It was a vicious storm that blew the construction crane down in June 2019. The massive crane landed on top of an apartment building just off Hwy 75 / Central Expressway, near downtown Dallas.

Resident Kiersten Symone Smith was killed while sitting in her apartment, five other residents in the apartment block were also injured.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs say the crane was not properly shut down for that weekend. They say that instead of the crane being left in a neutral position, it was locked down at the top. So instead of swinging with the high winds, the crane was fixed to take the strong winds broadside, causing it to topple onto the Elan Lights apartments.

At the time, OSHA had cited the company with 17 safety violations in the past ten years. Some of those violations the company is still contesting.

The plaintiffs are seeking millions from Biggie Crane and Rigging Company, the company who owned the crane. it was leased to Greystar Development and Construction.
