The Texas House has voted in favor of a bill calling on the state to permanently switch to Daylight Saving Time. The measure was sponsored by state Rep. Will Metcalf (R-Conroe).

"The antiquated practice of 'springing forward' and 'falling back' and changing our clocks twice a year is frustrating to many Texans," he said. "I believe we should stick to a time without switching twice a year...which allows for a maximum amount of daylight in the evenings. I know countless others feel the same way."

The bill passed the Texas House with an overwhelming majority. From there, it will go to the Texas Senate for consideration.

If the bill does eventually reach the desk of Governor Abbott for his signature, it is not likely to take effect in Texas anytime soon. That's because permanently switching to Daylight Saving Time is prohibited by federal law.

The U.S. government does allow states to bypass Daylight Saving Time and remain on Standard Time year-round. Hawaii and most of Arizona don't use Daylight Saving Time at all. Several U.S. territories including Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa also stay on Standard Time year-round.

The U.S. Senate has passed the Sunshine Protection Act. That bill that would make Daylight Saving Time permanent year-round. However, it has not been passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.
