An east Dallas apartment building is a soggy, smoldering mess because of an overnight three-alarm fire.

The fire broke out just before 1:00 a.m. as Dallas firefighters responded to the Oak Meadows Apartments, a complex on Woodmeadow Parkway just off 635-LBJ near La Prada.

On arrival, they found flames already jetting from the roof of a three-story building. Quickly, commanders added a second and then a third alarm.

Dallas Fire Rescue says there were two dozen units in the building. Half of them were damaged by flames but the rest were damaged by smoke and water - so the whole building is pretty much out of commission.

One resident was burned while trying to escape the fire. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to NBCDFW.com

Of the 24 units, just one was vacant so the Red Cross is helping the 23 families who are left with no place to live.

The exact cause of the fire is not yet known, officials said.
