A simple traffic stop in Dallas led to the recovery of a stolen vehicle containing police uniforms, equipment and about 500 rounds of ammunition, police said.
Dallas Police say officers stopped a white Dodge Charger in the early morning on Aug. 10 after seeing it traveling the wrong way on a one-way street without headlights, according to a press release from DPD. Officers said the driver was sweating heavily and unable to turn on the vehicle's headlights.
Police said they found a badge, police-issued shirts, bulletproof vests, emergency lights, a dashcam and other police gear inside the vehicle. About 500 rounds of duty ammunition also were recovered.
The equipment bore the name of the vehicle's registered owner, a Dallas police sergeant. The sergeant told police he was unaware the vehicle was missing.
Video footage showed the suspect entering the vehicle about an hour before the traffic stop, police said.
The driver was arrested on multiple traffic violations and a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
“These officers exemplify the vigilance and investigative tenacity that defines the Dallas Police Department,” said Assistant Chief Teena Schultz. “What began as a routine traffic stop became a prime example of how attention to detail can prevent further crime.”
