Tuskegee Airman Homer Hogues dies in Dallas at the age of 96

One of the few remaining Tuskegee Airmen has died in Dallas.

Homer Hogues was drafted into the US Army a year after the end of World War II and was trained as an airplane mechanic. Tuskegee Airmen was the term used to describe African-Americans who served in segregated aviation units in the final years before the Army was integrated in 1948.

Many of the Airmen received their training at Tuskegee Army Airfield and at what was then Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

Hogues was born in Navasota in 1927, His wife of 76 years, Mattie Bell Hogues, died on Sunday. Homer Hogues died Tuesday at the age of 96. A joint viewing is planned for today from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Evergreen Funeral Home in Dallas.

The couple's joint funeral is tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Antioch Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas.
