Commuters, bikers, joggers, and walkers around White Rock Lake may experience delays as the Texas Department of Transportation begins a six-month project to install barriers along Garland Road to prevent shoreline erosion and improve safety. The barriers are expected to safeguard the pedestrian trail, which runs close to the busy road.
The project comes after two recent vehicle crashes in the area drew the attention of city officials. One accident led to the death of a 19-year-old, while another involved a Dallas Fire-Rescue fire engine. TxDOT officials believe the barriers could reduce similar incidents in the future by creating a buffer between vehicles and the trail.
During construction, the city plans to create an alternate route for trail users and will monitor conditions to determine if a temporary closure of the trail is necessary. The project is expected to wrap up in approximately six months.
