UT Southwestern has cut a deal with the U. S. Department of Justice, leading to the biggest civil settlement over poor drug-bookkeeping in Texas history.
The hospital has agreed to pay $4.5 million for violations of the Controlled Substances Act.

It all comes down to an abysmal failure by UT Southwestern to keep track of opiod drugs such as fentynal. It was so bad that sloppy record keeping allowed nurses to steal fentanyl over years.
In two cases, nurses overdosed and were found dead in hospital bathrooms, according to federal officials.
The Justice Department says UT Southwestern did eventually report drug thefts, but not right away.
The multi-million dollar settlement is the biggest of it's kind in Texas history and the second biggest in the nation.
KRLD reporter L.P. Phillips had questions for UT Southwestern but so far the hospital has not responded.
