As of Wednesday, North Texas has reached at least 100 degrees for 17 days in a row. And we're expecting this heat to last for weeks longer.

For some, utility bills are skyrocketing. For others, they can't afford to repair or replace their air conditioner.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul North Texas is stepping up to help.

"We're in a position to try and help as much as we can when neighbors do call in," says Luis Gonzalez, CEO of Society of St. Vincent de Paul.

"Utility rates and utility bills are just going through the roof. And so folks can call in, and there are opportunities for us to be able to provide some assistance with utility bills if people can't afford them."

North Texas residents can visit this link, or call 214-520-0650 to inquire about eligibility.

Additionally, anyone who lives within 30 miles of downtown Dallas can register to get a free window air conditioning unit. For eligibility for that program, email lisa@svdpdallas.org.

"If they don't have air conditioning or if they have an air conditioning unit that is broken and needs repair and they can't afford it, we can get a smart unit put in for them," Gonzalez says.

"You kind of forget that there's a lot of people that just don't have (air conditioning) and that can't afford to have that air conditioning unit running maybe throughout the course of the day...and, with this kind of heat, it becomes very dangerous."
