Waymo has officially opened its driverless ride-hailing service to the general public across Dallas, ending the waitlist that had regulated passenger access since the company’s commercial launch earlier this year.
According to an announcement released by the company on Tuesday, August 4, anyone in Dallas can now download the Waymo app and request a fully autonomous ride without needing an invitation. Company officials reported that nearly 150,000 residents participated in the phased rollout through an interest list since initial operations began in February. The shift to full public availability allows both local residents and visitors to hail rides around the clock in Waymo’s fleet of fully electric Jaguar I-PACE robotaxis across the designated Dallas service area.
While rides are now widely accessible on local city streets, company representatives clarified that highway travel and airport service are not yet open to public passengers. Waymo confirmed that it is currently conducting fully autonomous testing at Dallas Love Field Airport terminals and plans to initiate freeway testing soon, which serves as the final phase before adding those high-speed routes to the commercial app.

Local community organizations have highlighted the impact of autonomous transit on regional mobility. Chris Justl, CEO of Epilepsy Foundation Texas, stated in a release that driverless vehicles represent a transformational step forward for individuals with medical conditions that limit their ability to drive, offering a new path toward independent travel.
Waymo’s expansion in Dallas comes as the company continues scaling its driverless operations across major metropolitan markets. According to company safety reporting, Waymo’s autonomous system has logged over 200 million miles nationwide, demonstrating significant reductions in injury-causing crashes compared to human drivers. Public health and transportation officials confirm no serious injuries or fatalities have been reported in connection with its Dallas commercial fleet. Dallas has rapidly become a major hub for autonomous vehicle deployment, with competitors like Amazon’s Zoox and Uber also actively testing driverless technology in North Texas.
