A western diamondback rattlesnake found in an Argyle garage in November has become the first officially documented specimen of the species in Denton County, scientists say.

The adult snake was added to the University of Texas at Arlington’s Amphibian and Reptile Diversity Research Center collection, expanding the known range of the venomous rattler in North Texas.

Experts say the discovery may point to a previously undetected local population rather than a one-off wanderer, and will help researchers better understand the species’ habitat and biology.
