A contractor was injured Tuesday after falling about 20 to 30 feet into an empty tank at a Rockwall wastewater treatment plant, authorities said.
The man was performing maintenance at the North Texas Municipal Water District’s Buffalo Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant on Horizon Road when he slipped while climbing down a ladder into the tank, according to district spokesman Alex Johnson and Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans.
Rockwall Fire Department crews were called just after 10:40 a.m. to the 4900 block of Horizon Road. Because of the tank’s depth and the technical demands of the rescue, Rockwall Fire requested assistance from Dallas Fire-Rescue’s Urban Search and Rescue team, which arrived around 11:10 a.m.
Rockwall firefighters reached the man and treated his injuries, which were not considered life-threatening. He was described as semi-alert during the operation. Dallas Fire-Rescue used ropes and a fire truck ladder to lift him out of the tank. He was then taken by ambulance and later flown by medical helicopter to a hospital.
His name and specific condition have not been released. Officials said there was no danger to the public.
Johnson said the North Texas Municipal Water District is assisting emergency responders and the contractor’s company in investigating the fall.
