We're generally living in a dog-eat-dog world, and occasionally a dog-shoots-man world because a man in Berks County, Pennsylvania, was rushed to the hospital after his dog shot him in the back.

How did it happen, what with the dog having no opposable thumbs even if he did harbor a grudge? Police say the pooch stepped on the gun, which accidentally caused a shotgun his owner was cleaning to go off.

The 53-year-old man had been cleaning a shotgun when he set it down on the bed, officers explained, adding that the dog jumped up and caused the gun to fire, striking the man.

Shillington Police confirmed that the man was taken to Reading Hospital, where he underwent immediate surgery for his injuries. The man's condition is currently unknown.
