President Trump’s mass deportation order has tremendous bipartisan support in Texas. That’s according to the latest poll out of the University of Houston.
It’s not surprising that 95% of Texas Republicans support the deportations. But the Senior Research Associate at the University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs Mark Jones said what is surprising is the percentage of Democrats who do.
“If the deportations become much more massive and much more indiscriminate, that’s where support will drop substantially," he said.
Jones added that what also jumped out was that two-thirds of Texans believe there should be a way for at least some undocumented immigrants to remain legally.
“They focus on those who have not committed any felonies or misdemeanors and then prioritize those who have a US citizen spouse, a US citizen dependant child or have come here as a child," he said.
The poll also delves into what Texans think of continuing border wall construction and ending the Texas Dream Act, which allows certain non-citizen students to pay in-state tuition at Texas public universities.
