U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-San Antonio) is urging Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth not to revert Fort Cavazos in Killeen back to its former name, Fort Hood.
There are growing concerns that the Pentagon may undo base name changes made to remove Confederate references.
Fort Cavazos was renamed in 2023 as part of a broader initiative to strip U.S. military installations of Confederate names. It now honors Gen. Richard E. Cavazos, the U.S. Army’s first Hispanic four-star general and a Medal of Honor recipient.
Castro, along with eight other Democratic members of Congress, sent a letter to Hegseth this week urging him to preserve the name. The lawmakers emphasized Cavazos’ legacy, describing him as a leader who served with distinction and embodied the nation’s highest values.
Their letter comes after Hegseth restored the name Fort Bragg to a base in North Carolina, raising concerns that other renamed bases, including Fort Cavazos, could follow.
No official decision has been announced regarding Fort Cavazos.
