AAA Texas says the number of insurance claims for stolen catalytic converters in Texas has increased 5,300% since 2019. The organization says the most common victims are people who own SUVs, pick-up trucks and other vehicles with a larger clearance above ground.

"These crimes happen day, night, every day of the year," says AAA's Daniel Armbruster. "These thieves are going to be looking for the path of least resistance."

In addition to larger cars that may have easier access to equipment from below, he says people are also targeting the Toyota Prius, which has two catalytic converters.

Armbruster says thieves are looking for rhodium and palladium inside the catalytic converter, saying they are worth more per ounce than gold. He says catalytic converter thefts are difficult to trace.

"A lot of times, law enforcement is not able to track these types of crimes, so it's important to do your own due-diligence and reduce the risk of becoming a victim," he says.

To reduce that risk, Armbruster urges people to park in a garage at home when possible. In public, he says people should park in well-lit areas with lots of foot traffic and as close to the entrance of a business as possible.

"That's the key to avoid any type of vehicle crime: trying to park in a well-lit area where people can see your vehicle," he says.

Armbruster says car owners can also calibrate their alarm system to go off when it detects vibration. He also says people may consider buying a converter protection shield or etching their VIN into their catalytic converter.

"That can help alert a scrap dealer it was stolen," he says. "It may not deter the thief or stop the crime, but at least, if you do have that VIN etched onto the catalytic converter, it can help solve the crime."

Armbruster also urges people to review their insurance policy to see if they have comprehensive coverage or only collision coverage.
