The Dallas Independent School District is just one of many districts across the state struggling to comply with the new state law requiring armed security by September 1st at all school districts.
For struggling school districts like DISD, it is costly to pay for a new guard as they may not have the necessary funds to support them. Texas only covers a portion of the cost.
The district says it would need to hire 170 guards and would have to come up with a way to pay them in order to meet the state requirement.
To combat this issue, Dallas ISD is working on another plan that involves increased police patrols near school campuses. While Dallas hopes this will cover the requirement, they also filed what they call a 'good cause exemption' with the state law.
It is unclear if districts will be punished for not meeting next week's deadline.
