A federal judge in Austin blocks a new Texas law that would have required app stores to verify users' ages before downloads or in-app purchases, stopping it from taking effect Jan. 1.

The ruling, issued Tuesday, finds the measure likely violates free speech protections.

The law targeted major app marketplaces and was aimed at limiting minors' access to certain online content. In granting a preliminary injunction, the judge paused enforcement while the legal challenge proceeds.

State officials argued the requirement was designed to protect children online, while opponents said it would force broad identity checks and chill lawful speech. The court's order keeps current app store practices in place as the case moves forward.

No timeline has been set for a final decision.
